When the wind in Mallorca is coming from South or Southwest directions, common sense indicates When the wind in Mallorca is coming from South or Southwest directions, common sense indicates that it would be best to navigate with kitesurfing on a beach oriented to those directions and of course, the logical thing would be to take the trip and go down to the south beaches of the island
But if we live in the north of the island and for some reason we can not go South for kitesurfing, or we are in summer and the beaches of the south are completely occupied by the tourism – in that case the thing is complicated because also the beaches of the northern part of Mallorca will be occupied –
We will see on this blog entry the different options for South and Southwest winds that the north of Mallorca offers for kitesurfing.
To this, it must be added that the previous experience has indicated on many occasions that even coming the wind from South, the western part of the Bay of Alcudia it has been receiving more consistent wind and even stronger than, for example, Can Pastilla or Sa Rapita
Let’s check carefully nor all the maps and see the different possibilities
Though the different maps come with the indications in spanish language, in each case it is easy to guess the intention of the arrows draw on each photo and by comparison it is also possible to imagine what happens in a South wind day on the Bay of Pollensa, Bay of Alcudia and in the southern beaches of Mallorca
The wind from South generally is perfect in Alcudia Bay, especially those blowing from the beginning of May and since October but there must be take into account that it happens very frequently that at noon or from the beginning of the afternoon, South wind has a tendency to swith direction and become Southwest.
If that is the case, the kitesurfing session will be over because that means it has turn to side offshore direction, then, the buildings next to the beach will stop the wind and in the best case it will be very gusty with wind holes that can leave you windless and floating
This would happen mostly in the part of the beach close to Alcudia Yatch Club, an area which it is known by the local kitesurfers as: “El Charco“, it would be less of a problem because it offers some more tolerance to the wind gusts of southwest – although it does not really helps much – but if winds really swith from South to Soutwest, a sudden -and not uncommon- fall of wind would leave us downwinded, or even windless and floating
If it is the case that we are on the last part of the Alcudia beach -El Charco- and next to the Yatch Club, as this is a real shallow area and the beach has a sort of hook shape this would avoid us getting drifted and towards the open sea
With Southwest wind the only option at the coast would be Aucanada, but there is no beach in fact and launch and landing the kite is not a really safe operation
In Aucanada, Southwest winds are also gusty in any case as the wind has to pass over the buildings which are in Playa de Alcudia, which are not really so far anyway
AND IF WE ARE AT POLLENSA BAY…
If in Bahia de Pollensa, the Southwest is the enemy number one, because it is totally offshore. South wind could be used down on the sandy beach at Port de Pollensa but it is always a bit gusty and that could only be done off season, otherwise the beach is quite busy with tourists and swimmers
Also a possibility would be to try to use the beach of the hotel Formentor. There, South wind direction should not be so bad but the beach is very small -narrow- and if being kitesurfing there wind would turn to Southwest it would become also be very gusty
SOUTH WIND DAY IN POLLENSA BAY

LAGO MAYOR ALCUDIA – BEST SOUTHWEST WIND OPTION?
And one last option would be to try kitesurfing on the Big Lake in Alcudia
Both South and Southwest wind directions should work, perhaps Southwest a bit better oriented. I do think nobody has ever tried kitesurfing there. It should be all about trying and seeing if it is possible
